n Womb Wisdom, Womb Reiki, Yoni Steaming, Sacredness, and Our Relationship With the Feminine Temple™
For generations, menstruation has often been approached primarily as something to manage, conceal, absorb, and discard. Something you check into yearly with your obgyn. Yet the menstrual cycle tells an extraordinary story about the reproductive body, and researchers are increasingly looking at menstrual blood itself as a valuable source of biological information. What leaves the body each month is worthy of our attention. Menstrual blood, referred to as menstrual effluent or menstrual fluid in scientific research, is a complex biological material. It contains blood along with endometrial tissue, cells, proteins, immune components, extracellular vesicles, and other biological substances associated with the uterine environment. Researchers are studying these materials because menstrual effluent provides an accessible way to investigate aspects of the endometrium and reproductive health. This emerging science opens an important conversation for those of us who have spent years working in womb wellness. Science is beginning to examine menstrual blood as a source of biological information, while womb centered practices invite women to examine their relationship with menstruation itself. Together, these perspectives give us an opportunity to look at the menstrual cycle with renewed curiosity, reverence, and awareness. Menstrual Blood Is Biologically Rich Menstruation occurs after the endometrium has spent part of the cycle developing in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. When pregnancy does not occur, portions of that uterine lining are shed. The resulting menstrual fluid contains biological material originating from this remarkable tissue. The endometrium itself has an extraordinary capacity for cyclical growth, shedding, repair, and regeneration. Researchers have identified stem and progenitor cells associated with the endometrium, and cells with stem cell characteristics can also be isolated from menstrual fluid. This regenerative biology is one reason menstrual blood has become increasingly interesting to researchers. Menstrual blood emerges from a sophisticated reproductive process of preparation, shedding, repair, and renewal. What Menstrual Blood May Reveal About the Womb One of the most promising areas of menstrual effluent research involves endometriosis. Researchers have been investigating whether menstrual effluent can provide information about biological processes associated with the condition and whether biomarkers found within it could eventually contribute to less invasive approaches to detection and understanding. A 2026 systematic review examined 35 studies comparing menstrual effluent or menstrual effluent derived cells from women with endometriosis and controls. Across the studies, researchers identified differences involving immune activity, progesterone response, cellular signaling, angiogenesis, cellular senescence, DNA damage, and extracellular vesicle signaling. Although more research is needed the possibility is profound. Menstruation could increasingly become an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to learn about reproductive biology through material the body naturally releases. Menstrual Blood Derived Stem and Stromal Cells Another fascinating area of research involves menstrual blood derived stem or stromal cells, or MenSCs. Researchers are interested in these cells partly because menstrual fluid is periodically available and can be collected through considerably less invasive means than sources such as bone marrow. Research has explored their proliferative, immunomodulatory, and regenerative characteristics and possible future applications within regenerative medicine. Scientists have investigated areas including endometrial repair, reproductive medicine, tissue regeneration, and other therapeutic possibilities. This remains an evolving research field to be studied. The significance of this research is remarkable. Something the menstruating body releases naturally contains cells researchers are studying for what they may teach us about regeneration, reproductive biology, and future medical therapies. The Womb as a Place of Regeneration For those of us engaged in womb centered work, the regenerative nature of the endometrium carries another layer of meaning. Month after month, the uterine environment develops, prepares, responds, releases, repairs, renews, and begins another cycle. There is a rhythm within the biology itself. Within my teachings, this rhythm is one expression of the Feminine Temple™, the integration of the reproductive body with the emotional, creative, intuitive, energetic, and spiritual dimensions through which a woman experiences herself. Biological science and spiritual technology together encourage women to become deeply curious about our bodies. Menstruation as a Time of Listening The menstrual cycle gives women an opportunity to observe their bodies across time. A woman may begin noticing how she feels before menstruation, how her energy changes, what patterns repeat, what her body requests, what happens with her creativity, what emotions become especially present, and what dreams or insights arise during different phases of her cycle. She can reflect upon what she is completing and what she may be preparing to create next. This is sacred body literacy. The more familiar a woman becomes with her own patterns, the greater her opportunity to recognize meaningful changes and communicate those observations to her healthcare professionals when appropriate. Within sacred feminine practice, this awareness can also extend into prayer, journaling, meditation, ancestral reflection, rest, creativity, and ritual. The menstrual cycle becomes a relationship that develops over time. Womb Reiki and the Menstrual Cycle Within the Womb Reiki System, the womb is honored as part of the Feminine Temple, a sacred center associated with creation, intuition, memory, transformation, receptivity, vitality, and feminine wisdom. Womb Reiki™ offers women a practice for becoming present with this relationship. During personal Womb Reiki™ practice, a woman may place her hands upon the lower abdomen, breathe deeply, receive Universal Love Energy, and bring compassionate awareness toward the Feminine Temple™. During menstruation, this can become especially meaningful because the body is already moving through a biological season of release and renewal. Womb Reiki™ creates intentional space for listening, receiving, reflection, and connection. Emotions may arise. Memories may surface. Creative ideas may appear. Dreams may become vivid. The body may ask for rest. The womb may whisper. Within Womb Reiki™, we call this developing relationship with feminine intuitive awareness Wombtuition. Wombtuition grows through attention and body awareness, Womb Reiki, Yoni Steaming, Womb Massage and all these Feminine Arts guide women into reflection, and compassionate presence which create opportunities to become increasingly familiar with her own inner language. The cycle itself becomes one of the rhythms through which she learns to listen. Yoni Steam and the Menstrual Cycle Yoni Steaming also holds an important place within this larger conversation. The significance of Yoni Steaming within my teachings has always included relationship. A woman prepares her space, selects her herbs, and creates an intentional environment for herself. She may create an altar, light a candle, play music, keep her journal nearby, pray, breathe, and establish an intention before beginning her practice. Then she sits with herself. That act of intentionally creating time for the yoni and womb can become its own ritual of remembrance. Yoni Steaming and Womb Reiki and the Feminine Arts therefore share a common invitation to return to the Feminine Temple. Womb Reiki creates an opportunity to receive Universal Love Energy and cultivate energetic awareness. Yoni Steam creates a physical ritual of warmth, presence, intention, self care, and connection with the yoni and womb. Timing is an important part of responsible Yoni Steam practice. Within my Yoni Steam teachings, active menstrual bleeding is honored as its own phase of the cycle, while steaming is reserved for appropriate times outside active bleeding. A woman may devote her menstrual days to observation, Womb Reiki™, journaling, prayer, rest, and release. Her Yoni Steaming ritual at an appropriate time within the cycle can then become an intentional practice of reconnection, renewal, and preparation for what comes next. Returning Menstrual Blood to the Earth There is another conversation that deserves space within menstrual reverence: returning menstrual blood to the Earth. Some women choose to collect their menstrual blood and return a small amount to the Earth as a personal or spiritual offering. The significance of this practice is ritual and symbolic, creating an intentional relationship among the woman, her cycle, her blood, and the Earth. For the woman who feels called to this practice, the symbolism can be profound. The womb prepared, the body released, the Earth receives, and the woman begins again. Menstrual blood may be diluted with water and returned privately and hygienically to appropriate sacred soil. As she returns her blood to the Earth I return this blood with gratitude. I honor the womb that prepared and the body that released. I return what has completed its cycle to the Earth. May this release create space for renewal. May my creativity be nourished. May my life remain fertile with purpose, love, healing, abundance, and sacred possibility. The offering becomes an intentional moment of reciprocity between body and Earth. The womb creates. The body releases. The Earth receives. Life continues. The Womb as Altar The womb offers another expression of altar. Each reproductive cycle, the uterine environment prepares and changes. Within the spiritual language of the Feminine Temple, we may contemplate this preparation as sacred incubation. Creation begins within the unseen. A child begins unseen. An idea begins unseen. A calling begins unseen. Healing may begin before its outward expression becomes visible. A business begins as vision. A book begins as a thought. A new life begins as possibility. This is the wisdom of wombnifestation. The Feminine Temple™ teaches us how to receive, incubate, nourish, create, release, renew, and begin again. Menstruation becomes part of a larger teaching about the rhythms through which creation moves. Menstrual Blood, Maternal Lineage, and Remembrance Menstruation can also invite reflection upon the maternal lineage. One tangible biological connection between generations is mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial DNA is inherited almost exclusively through the maternal line and contains genes essential to mitochondrial energy production and cellular function. Through this inheritance, the body carries a biological connection to the maternal lineage. Within sacred feminine practice, this biological continuity can also serve as a powerful symbol of lineage and remembrance. Every woman exists within a story that began before her, a lineage of women who created, nurtured, adapted, persevered, dreamed, prayed, loved, and carried life forward. The menstrual cycle can become an invitation to contemplate that continuity and the generations of feminine life that preceded our own. Menstrual Science Meets Menstrual ReverenceOne of the most meaningful transformations available to us is changing the way we speak about menstruation. We can learn anatomy, understand hormones, study menstrual fluid, advocate for stronger endometriosis research, pay attention to changes in our cycles, seek appropriate healthcare, and follow developments involving menstrual blood derived cells and regenerative medicine. We can also sit at an altar, pray, journal, practice Womb Reiki™, honor our cycles, create meaningful rituals, and listen when the womb whispers. This is the meeting place between menstrual science and menstrual reverence. Emerging menstrual blood research gives us an extraordinary opportunity to become increasingly curious about something women experience throughout much of their reproductive lives. Researchers are showing that menstrual effluent can provide meaningful biological information about the uterine environment, and ongoing research is exploring its possible future roles in reproductive health assessment and regenerative medicine. For womb centered practitioners, this scientific attention also invites a larger cultural question: What becomes possible when women become deeply curious about their menstrual blood and the bodies that produce it? The cycle carries a rhythm of preparation, creation, release, regeneration, and return. Womb Reiki gives us a practice for energetic releasing and embodying. Yoni Steaming gives us a ritual for intentionally tending our relationship with the yoni and womb using the science of mother earth. Biology gives us an expanding understanding of the remarkable material contained within menstrual fluid. The Feminine Temple gives us a sacred framework for bringing these conversations into relationship. Your cycle carries rhythm. Your menstrual blood carries biological information. Your womb carries creative possibility. And your Feminine Temple™ carries an invitation to return home to yourself.
